According to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, applicants must have a bank deposit of at least 800,000 baht, a monthly income of at least 65,000 baht, or a combination of deposits and income totalling at least 800,000 baht1. The visa is valid for one year with multiple entries, and the holder can stay for one year from the date of first entry.

Applicants who live in Australia lodge the application online through the Thai e-Visa system. The Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra states that processing takes at least 10 business days and up to four to six weeks in some cases4.

Australia is one of 14 countries whose nationals can apply for the Non-Immigrant O-X visa, which allows applicants aged 50 and over to stay for five years at a time, for a maximum of 10 years5. The 3,000,000 baht deposit was equal to about $128,150 on 30 September 20262.

Thailand's Non-Immigrant O visa for retirement allows applicants aged 50 or older to stay in Thailand for up to 90 days. It requires an 800,000 baht bank balance or a monthly income of at least 65,000 baht6.

The Silver, Gold and Platinum categories are open to applicants aged 25 and over, and none requires income from overseas under the terms stated as accurate as of 22 July 2024.

Participants must buy and own a home after approval, worth at least RM600,000 in Silver, RM1 million in Gold and RM2 million in Platinum. The property cannot be sold for 10 years unless it is replaced with a higher-value home7. Up to 50% of the fixed deposit can be withdrawn after approval to buy the home or to pay for education, medical treatment or tourism costs in Malaysia.

The one-off participating fee is RM1,000 in Silver, RM3,000 in Gold and RM200,000 in Platinum, and the processing fee is RM5,000 for the principal applicant and RM2,500 for each dependant8.

A fourth category, for the Special Economic Zone and Special Financial Zone, requires a fixed deposit of USD 32,000 from applicants aged 50 and over and USD 65,000 from applicants aged 21 to 49. Participants must buy a home in Forest City, Johor9.

At the Reserve Bank of Australia's exchange rates for 30 September 2026, the Silver minimum fixed deposit was equivalent to about $214,990, and the Silver minimum home value was equivalent to about $210,7002.

How can Australian retirees get a residence permit in Poland?

Poland's temporary residence permit for other circumstances is available to foreigners who want to stay for more than three months and whose reason for staying is not covered by another type of permit, according to Poland's Office for Foreigners11. The permit allows a stay of more than three months to 3 years, depending on the reason for the stay. The holder can apply for a further permit.

Applicants must provide proof of health insurance and a stable and regular source of income that covers their own living costs and those of dependent family members11. From 1 January 2025, the minimum monthly income requirements are PLN 1,010 a month for a single-person household and PLN 823 per person in a family, according to the Wielkopolska Voivodeship Office12.

At exchange rates for 30 September 2026, PLN 1,010 was equivalent to about $376 and PLN 823 was equivalent to about $306, with both amounts converted through the euro13.

The application must be made in person to the regional governor (voivode) for the applicant's place of residence, while the applicant's stay in Poland is still legal11. The application fee for the permit is PLN 34014. The residence card costs PLN 5015.

Australian passport holders can enter Poland, which is part of the Schengen area, without a visa for certain short stays, according to Smartraveller. For stays of up to 90 days, biometric details must be recorded on arrival16.

Section 04 · Compared

How do income and deposit requirements compare across Thailand, Malaysia and Poland?

Thailand's O-A visa had the lowest minimum deposit of the six options open to applicants aged 50 and over that are compared here: Thailand's O-A and O-X visas, and Malaysia's Silver, Gold, Platinum and Special Economic Zone categories. At 30 September 2026 rates, the minimum deposit was 800,000 baht, or about $34,1702. Malaysia's MM2H Platinum category had the highest minimum fixed deposit among the same six, at USD 1 million, or about $1,433,280.

Poland's temporary residence permit has an income requirement rather than a deposit, at PLN 1,010 a month for a single-person household, or about $37612. Thailand's O-A income option requires 65,000 baht a month, or about $2,780, while MM2H has no income requirement in any category7.

Malaysia's Silver, Gold and Platinum categories also require a home purchase, with minimum home values equivalent to about $210,700 to $702,320 at 30 September 2026 rates2. Up to 50% of the fixed deposit can be withdrawn after approval to help pay for the purchase7.

The Thailand O-A deposit is one of three ways to meet that visa's financial test, and the O-X amount can be replaced by 1,800,000 baht plus 1,200,000 baht of annual income. Poland is not shown because its permit sets an income test rather than a deposit.

Between January 2023 and September 2026, the month-end Australian dollar equivalent of Thailand's 800,000 baht deposit ranged from $32,760 at the end of June 2024 to $38,150 at the end of January 20252.

Exchange rate movements change the Australian dollar value of income received overseas, according to Smartraveller17.
